The Italian flag is known in Italy as Bandiera d'Italia, often referred to in Italian as "Il Tricolore". It is based on the French flag and it's origins come from Napoleon Bonaparte's occupation of Northern Italy in 1797. There are differing opinions as to the symbolism of the colours, both religious, environmental and military.

The flag may often by seen flying during popular sporting events in Italy, such as football and cycling.
