Jacqueline Kennedy became a member in the Democratic Party since her husband, Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was a rising star in the party. She vowed to support her husband in every way she could. She was initially Republican since her family were members of the Old Money Eastern Establishment (the Bouviers on the paternal side and the Lees on the maternal side) that had been the backbone of the Republican Party dating back to its emergence in the 1850s. Both of her grandfathers were stockbrokers on Wall Street, which very likely made them polar opposites to their Democratic counterparts in economic and social issues. She once told a group of Democrats that she was once a Republican, but said "You have to be a Republican to know how nice it is to be a Democrat...," then she introduced to the crowd "...the man who made me a Democrat, my husband, Jack Kennedy." Her words are from an article from the Tuscaloosa News, October 23rd, 1960.
