Cook's visits to the Pacific islands were both good and bad for the people that lived there. He brought them domesticated animals such as sheep, pigs, goats and cows. The animals provided meat for food and skins clothing. The flood of European explorers that came after Cook brought diseases, such as smallpox, one of the world's most feared viruses, and tuberculosis, a lung disease. Countless people native to the South Pacific died as a result.

James Cook learnt from the natives. Although he believed that natives were inferior to white Europeans, he did accept that they knew the lands he explored, so he set out to try and learn from them what he could.

James Cook explored much of the eastern Australian coast on behalf of Britain, which was looking to found new colonies given the looming probable independence of the American colonies. Cook took extensive notes of what he called New South Wales, eventually recommending the continent as an English penal colony. It was because of Cook's notes and observations of the potential of the land that Australia was colonised by the British.
