In terms of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Navy (IJN) was able to achieve both tactical, operational, and strategic surprise. Several factors contributed to this. The Japanese strike force operated under strict radio silence, and sailed to its targets in Hawai'i through an area uncovered by American radar and reconnaissance. The Japanese also attacked on a Sunday, at a time when most of the American servicemen were either sleeping or just waking up, not expecting an attack. Lastly, the US also contributed to its own surprise at Pearl Harbor, both by underestimating Japanese capabilities and overestimating their own security. (They downplayed the results of a mock carrier attack on Pearl Harbor in 1938, and did not believe the Japanese were logistically capable of attacking with so great a force.)

During WWII, some Japanese army hand grenades were ARMED by tapping it's arming device on the Japanese steel helmet. If you watch closely at some WWII vintage (actual footage) film you'll notice advancing Japanese troops (probably in Manchuria) striking their steel helmets before throwing their grenades. They do this very quickly, and most viewers don't catch it, as it looks to routine, and the narrator mentions nothing of it. But, that's what they're doing alright...arming their grenades, by striking their helmets with them.
The Japanese hoped to catch the European colonial powers by surprise by attacking Dutch and British colonies located in Southeast Asia. They also planned to attack U.S. outposts in the Pacific.
