The Dreadnought that Master Chief arrived on entered the Sol system on November 8th, but didn't land on Earth until November 17th, which is when the Master Chief escaped and jumped to the surface (at the start of Halo 3). Miranda Keyes, Avery Johnson, and the Arbiter killed Tarturus and stopped the firing of Installation 05 between November 3rd and November 7th, theoretically allowing enough time for them to travel back to Earth using some ship before the Chief's arrival. This is never explicitly explained in the games, however, and is up to speculation.
