Rizal is our National Hero because he stands out among Filipino heroes. Many gave their lives and sacrificed their happiness and family to fight for an independent Philippines but Rizal stands out because of his intelligence as backed up by countless books, poems, essays and various professions (e.g. doctor, author, surveyor, linguist etc). He embodies what a Filipino should be -- the perfect contradiction of a Westener's poor regard and lowly expectations of a Filipino -- during those times, when discrimination against us is prevalent.
