For those lucky enough to have skills deemed as essential for the new Colony and a willingness to consider such an adventure he could promise them a grant of land at some future date for their services for a set period of time. The more essential the skill, the better deal that they could negotiate. Common labor could be bound to him from a debtors prison or common criminals and their servitude was for up to seven years. There were also some who were seeking an adventure and a chance to get rich. A few Gentlemen were granted large manors or plantations and they paid their own way and for the transport of their personal entourage.
