Belief in Manifest Destiny didn't directly contribute to the Civil War. Those who believed in Manifest Destiny believed it was their God given right to continue expansion of the country based on their belief of Anglo-American superiority. However, indirectly the sectionalism between the north and south intensified based on the annexing of Texas, a slave holding state, and the introduction of the concept that took the decision of whether a state would be slave or not out of the hands of the federal government, and into the hands of the states.

How was manifest destiny implemented?

Manifest Destiny was the belief held by Americans that the U.S. should own all of the land on North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This was achieved when the U.S. won the Mexican-American War and acquired what is now the Southwestern U.S. However, acquisition of this land brought back up the slavery question, i.e. should this new territory be slave or free--an argument that would eventually lead to the U.S. Civil War. The manifest destiny also led back to popular soveignty!!!
