∙ 7y agoFirst of all, Medina IS a holy city in Islam; it just happens to be the second holiest city instead of the holiest city in Islam, which Mecca is.
However, Mecca was the always holiest city in Islam because of the presence of the Ka'aba, which Muslims believe that Abraham carved for Ishmael, the progenitor of the Arabs, from an asteroid (literally a rock from heaven). Additionally, Muhammad's early life and preaching all took place in Mecca. Medina was only his base of operations for 8-9 years after he had been ejected from Mecca and Medina was always seen as an interim capital. Once Mecca was captured by the Muslims, power shifted back to Mecca from Medina.
