The general population didn't really know what was going on in the United States at the time -- remember, internet and CNN didn't exist 150 years ago. However, when Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821, slavery was banned. It wasn't until 1830 that the Constitution had an emancipation law written on it. This of course, put Texian slave holders at odds against the Mexican government.
