Michigan had many contributions to the Civil War. More then 90,000 men, a third of the mens population in 1860, joined to fight the civil war. In addition 14,000 volunteers joined the Union Navy. Approximately 2,600 people from Michigan died in service. Sixty-Seven MIchigan soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery and courage in combat. When President Lincoln asked the nation for volunteers, one regiment was sworn into war. He was trained at Fort Wayne in Detroit. This happened in May of 61'.
Michigan had lots to do with the Underground Railroad. It hosted to main routes; one to the middle of the state and another to Detroit. By the end on 1861, there were 21 Michigan regiments; 11 cavalry regiments; and regiments of engineers, mechanics, sharpshooters and artillery. Michigan soldiers also participated in the Siege of Petersburg, including the Battle of the Crater in 1864. After the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army, it was a Michigan cavalry unit that captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis near Irwinsville, Ga., on May 7, 1865.
