Reports are still being confirmed but one Libyan fighter is quoted as saying he witnessed Gaddafi being shot in the lower body with a 9mm pistol. This answer will continue to be updated as reports are confirmed.

At this point, there are conflicting answers. The new transitional government of Libya claims he was killed in a crossfire of gunshots between his own forces and rebel forces. But other sources dispute that, and a video that was posted to the internet seems to show that he was captured alive and then shot to death by the rebels, one of whom seems to have subjected his corpse to some form of sexual assault, meant to show contempt for him. Human rights groups have been asking the new government for an independent investigation of how Gaddafi died, but such an investigation may take a while. For most Libyans, how he died is not as important as the fact that the man who was such a tyrant for so long is no longer in power.
