Greek astronomers were aware that the planets traveled on different paths than the stars, and since they were usually very bright by comparison, they were made sacred to specific gods. The Greeks, though, could only see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
Later, after the invention of the telescope, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, and after some heated debate, they decided to stick with mythological references for the names, since the closer planets were named centuries before.
It's interesting to not, though, that the Greeks today call Neptune Poseidon.
