How did Nintendo come up with Mario and why are they still making Mario games?

Mario was originally called Jumpman, and was the player character in the arcade game Donkey Kong. Later, Nintendo decided to change his name to Mario ( there are several rumours as to whom mario is named after, including one that says he was named after one of the owners of the pizzeria across the street from Nintendo HQ in the US). His classic outfit was designed less for aesthetics and more for practicality; the first Super Mario Bros. game was on the NES, which had too little memory to process hair, so they gave him a hat. Also, the display from the NES was so pixellated that if all his clothes were one colour, the player would be unable to differentiate his legs from the rest of his body; so in order to make the legs obvious, ninty gave mario his trademark dungarees. As for the second part, Nintendo are still making Mario games because lots of people buy them. They are great games, so there is no reason for ninty to stop making mario games.
