The pompeiian people had little warning before the eruption you cant protect anything from 5'000*F mixture of rock glass and ash moving at 600mph and Vesuvius was and still is a very unpredictable and essentailly a ticking timebomb even now the cities and communities around it are all at risk.

There wasn't much the people of Pompeii could do to protect themselves. They only had minutes between the final eruption of the volcano and when the cloud hit the city ( some experts say it was about 7 min.) The heat was over 900 degrees so their brains boiled in their heads or they chocked on the dust that they took in. This turned into cement in their lungs drowning them. Some did try to hide along the coast in boathouses, but they suffered the same fate. Sixty-five acres were covered and 3 cities in this eruption.
