The interaction between Portuguese navigators and the peoples of Africa resulted in the colonization of strategic points on the west and east sides of the continent. For Bartolomeu Dias [c. 1450-May 29, 1500] had shown that a sea route along the African coast, and into the Indian ocean, was possible. Consequently, Portuguese ships needed refueling and rest stops all along the way of such a long sea route to India. The strategic stop on the west side was called Portuguese West Africa, which became the modern country of Angola. The strategic stop on the east side was called Portuguese East Africa, which became the modern country of Mozambique. In each case, the coast became the most developed part of the country. For example, the Portuguese colonizers of the subsequent Angola went from building forts and trading posts to building townships, logging camps, and facilities for small-scale processing industries. The Portuguese colonizers made the development decisions for the colony. As a result, the growing Angolan economy became the supplier of slaves to Brazil. But Portugal recognized that South American colony's demand for independence on August 29, 1825. And so, throughout the rest of the 19th century, the Angolan economy became the export producer of coffee, cotton, foodstuffs, ivory, and timber. And, finally, the Angolan economy was shifted in yet another direction, with the discovery and export production of diamonds, iron ore, and petroleum.
