He affected the world in many ways. The most obvious is Islam as it is known today. There are approximately 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. Islam, acting as a glue for the Muslim "ummah", indirectly brought huge changes to the world that thousands of books have recorded, through the cooperation of Muslim scholars, scientists, etc., to change science, math, and much, much more.

In fact, the most common name in the world is Muhammad.

Muhammad founded his own religion by writing the Quran...no different than all religions in being human accomplishment. There is only one that is Divine and able to support itself on every aspect of life as we know it, and that is Christianity...contrary to unstudied and biased individuals.

First of all, one needs to read and discover the practices, customs and norms of the people around the advent of Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Pre-Islamic Pagan Arabs used to worship idols, the sun, the moon, trees, etc. Thus they used to associate partners (in worship) with Allah as the Quran mentions:

[Say (O Muhammad SAW) to these idolaters (pagan Arabs) of your folk:] Follow what has been sent down unto you from your Lord (the Qur'ân and Prophet Muhammad's Sunnah), and follow not any Auliyâ' (protectors and helpers, etc. who order you to associate partners in worship with Allâh), besides Him (Allâh). Little do you remember! (Al-A'raf 7:3)

Also, they used to debase and dishonour women by sleeping with as many of them as they could. One of their practices was for a whore or prostitute to invite around 10 men to her house to have sex with, and when one of them impregnated her, she would invite them back and choose herself who her father was, most often using a seeress.

Moreover, female offspring were buried alive by the Pagan Arabs because this they believed brought shame upon them. The Quran relates this heinous practice:

"And when the news of (the birth of) a female (child) is brought to any of them, his face becomes dark, and he is filled with inward grief! (An-Nahl 16:58)"

Women at that time had no rights or very little rights. They had no rights to inheritance, to own property, etc. and were treated as material objects and chattel. The Arabs could marry as many women as they liked as there was no limit, also an Arab could marry his own sisters at the same time:

Forbidden to you (for marriage) are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, your foster mother who gave you suck, your foster milk suckling sisters, your wives' mothers, your step daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom you have gone in - but there is no sin on you if you have not gone in them (to marry their daughters), - the wives of your sons who (spring) from your own loins, and two sisters in wedlock at the same time, except for what has already passed; verily, Allâh is OftForgiving, Most Merciful. (An-Nisa 4:23)

When Islam came, it abolished all these practices, in particular polytheism and the worship of other things besides Allah. So these are just some of the changes that have been brought about by Islaam, under the Messengership of Muhammad. This has continued up until our times, where Islam is the fastest growing religion and is on the rise, with most of the people embracing Islam being western, educated, middle class women.

For more information about the man, Muhammad, read the books on seerah (biography of Muhammad) written by Shaikh Safi ur Rahman Mubarakpuri such as Ar-Raheeq Al-Maktoum (The Sealed Nectar) and When the Moon Split. These are amongst the most authentic biographies unlike the likes of Martin Lings.
