As The Royal Protector for his underage nephew King Edward V, he then had his two royal nephews (Edward and Richard of Shrewbury) imprisoned in The Tower of London for protection, where they mysteriously disappeared. He then proclaimed himself King.
Edward IV, his brother, (the king) died, one of his sons (Edward) became king, Richard was his protector, and then he locked them (supposedly) in a tower and hired a killer to execute them. He then became King and died 2 years later at the Battle of Bosworth field.
It is important however to note it may not be completely factual, Shakespeare (as this story is most commonly told) had to write negatively of him because Queen Elizabeth was the granddaughter of Richmond, the guy who reigned after he killed Richard, so she would have had Shakespeare executed if there was anything negative about richmond.
