Initially myth and legend formed the foundations of Rome-(Romulus), the doings of the deities were used to explain anything that was supernatural or un-explainable by common knowledge. There were gods for mostly to everything-so everything could be related back to the gods.
The term Greco-Roman refers to art, not religion. The Greeks influenced Roman religion as well. The Romans adopted some Greek gods, liked their gods to the Greek ones, and absorbed many Greek myths. However, unlike art, where the Romans adopted and adopted Greek canons, Roman religion remained distinct from Greek region.
The Romans were heavily influenced by the Greeks. This started very early on and originally this influenced came from the cities the Greeks founded in southern Italy and Sicily between the 8th and the 5th century BC. Being a more advanced civilisation, the arrival of the Greeks had a big influence on the Italic peoples they came in contact with. Etruscan civilisation arose from trade and contact with these Greeks. Both the Etruscans and the Latins adopted and adapted the Greek alphabet to develop their own written languages. The adoption of some Greek gods by the Romans already occurred in this period.
Later, when the Romans came into contact with mainland Greece they were influenced by these Greeks as well. The Roman elite looked up to the Greeks. They received an education in both Latin and Greek. The pinnacle of education for a Roman elite man was a period of stay in Greece to study Greek philosophy.
