Romania began to gain independence from the Soviet Union after the death of Joseph Stalin. Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej later convinced Nikita Khrushchev to withdraw Soviet troops from Romania in 1958, granting them even more freedom. The country was officially independent of Soviet rule after the 1989 fall of the Soviet Union.
Until 1989 Romania was a communist country. The people were revolted because the communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu ''brought'' the country to disaster.
After 24 May 1958 the Romanian government managed to obtain after long negotiations that Soviet troops leave Romania after 14 years of occupation.
The independence of modern Romania is from 9 May 1877, the day when the war against Turkey was started.
Romania was an ally of Germany and fight against Soviet Union to free Romanian territories occupied by Russians.
Feb. 1990
You should be aware the the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1990 when all of its 16 constituent republics voted to secede from the USSR. So everybody was free from the Soviet Union once there no longer was a Soviet Union. As for the communist regime of Romania, that was overthrown by a general revolt. It was extremely unpopular.
People born in the Soviet Union before it broke up can call themselves Soviets if the want, but their nationality is that of the the country they were born in when it was part of the Soviet Union. For example, a 40-year-old born in the Ukraine state of the Soviet Union is Ukrainian, but free to call themself a Soviet.
The goal was to discourage the Soviet Union from attacking free nations.
In the first part of the war Romania wanted to free Romanian territories occupied by the Soviet Union invaders. After 23.08.1944 Romania was forced to fight against Germany.
In June 1940 the Soviet Union attacked Romania and occupied two provinces (Basarabia and Bucovina), as a consequence of the pact Ribbentrop-Molotov. Romania was forced to wait a year for an alliance (unwanted in principle, of course)with Germany to free the territories occupied by Soviet Stalinist bandits and communists.
1. Hungary was a traditional ally of Germans.2. Romania want to free Romanian territories invaded by Soviet Union. Also Germany was the sole country to offer protection for Romania.
