Their military was the main reason for the expansion and generals like Scipio Africanus ], who defeated Hannibal of Carthage helped its cause. The tactics developed by Romans for infantry and cavalry are in vogue even today in their modified and refined forms.

∙ 14y agoModern armies have borrowed much from the Roman Army, mainly in terms of unit organization, as well as in standardization, specialization, and training. In the late Roman Republic, the concept of the professional army was developed, and it had a great advantage over conscripted citizen soldiers led by political appointees of dubious military skill. The weapons and tactics have changed since, but the task-oriented structure of the Roman military has been preserved.

∙ 8y agoThe increase in both the size of the Roman military and the pay for soldiers and officers in the 3rd century A.D. resulted in an enormous fiscal burden for the Roman state. This and the doubling in the size of the Roman bureaucracy by the emperor Diocletian in the the 3rd century A.D. meant that the state was hardly able to finance its enormous expenditure. This lead to oppressive taxation regimes which were deeply resented by the people.

The Antient roman military was one of the most successful armies in history, and the modern army has studied it's tactics, armour and how they trained. The modern military has also studied there weapons, and modernized a few to make them more powerful using technology, which the romans didn't have. The armour has been copied in some places, like hard helmets to protect the head, and has been tweaked to withstand new weapons like bombs and bullets.
