In the fourth century, Emperor Constantine made himself, and his successors, the de facto leader of the Christian Church, with the bishop of Rome as one of the five Metropolitans, or senior bishops of the Church. The loss to Christianity of Carthage in northern Africa, and the Great Schism of 1054, left the bishop of Rome, known in the West as the pope, as the supreme leader of the Catholic Church.

St. Peter was buried under the high altar in St. Peter's Basilica, his remains have been unearthed recently and documented. St. Paul is buried in St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica. See
