Assigned to a special work group staffed by priests, he was supervised by especially vicious guards. His faithfulness brought him horrible beatings and the worst assignments. Francis Gajowniczek, a married man with children, was chosen to die in payment. Saint Maximilian Kolbe offered his life in exchange and he died, as he wished to, in service to the Lord.
