While he freed his mind from the hindrances of desire he did this by directing (controlling) his mind towards the Eightfold Path - right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration.
By following the eight fold path. And stating ny getting rid of his desires.

One must learn the art of true desire through a long path of repeatedly failing in every way their mind can imagine before they see that all felt from beneath the mind comes to pass. True desire arises from the heart of the Soul , but for these desires ever be fulfilled one must realize the Secret is to focus the mind on a spot within the heart of both body and soul, some refer to it as the tiny place within the the tiny place within the heart. Once the mines focus is the unifier and bridge between the Trinity of self the process begins to occur and a self-feeding cycle of understanding leading to Vision lighting to feeling leading to understanding. Eventually, one will understand that wisdom is the lack of thought and retention of knowledge. The mind is just a conduit like a wire inside of a computer and the knowledge is stored in the soul that gets to view that Knowledge from the perspective of many lives.
