Following the Russia Revolution in 1917, Joseph Stalin held his power using Propaganda, fear, and manipulation. He had his propaganda department make posters and convince people of things that werent true. Also, he threatened that bad things would happen if he was not leading. He also had many ways of manipulating things to his advantage that made it easier for him to rule.

also he had purges-periodic arrests and executions. this kept people living in terror and fear.

Joseph Stalin used his power to gain absolute control. He used the military as a threatening force against the people to discourage rebelling. He used his power as a means to expand his empire through success in WW2. Stalin also used his power as a tool to institute the USSR as a vital componet in WW2, therefore making their continuance in the war vital to the Allies.
