In the 1860's it was not easy to plan battles or gauge how long it would take to move an army to a designated position. Rough terrain, snow storms or extreme heat could hamper an army from reaching a particular location. During the US Civil War, officers had training and drilling books to help them move armies with some degree of certainty. Manuals written by active West Point graduates provided the help field commanders needed. Generals Winfield Scott, Silas Casey and William J. Hardee. For example, Hardee's manual could help officers calculate how long it would take their army to reach a designated location. Marching at double quick step, which is 160 steps per minute, an army could cover five miles in one hour.
