The US was involved with the 1980-1988 Gulf War in the Persian Gulf during Saddam Hussain's war with Iran...in fact the US Navy warship USS Stark was hit by an Iraqi missile during that war, killing about 30 US Sailors...US interests were to keep and maintain a safe passage thru the Persian Gulf during that long and bloody war.
