Necessity is the mother of invention. The Viet War accelerated the helicopter. Choppers existed in WWII, and Korea accelerated that machine into US Military service (USA svc). After it was in service with the USA, other branches experimented with it. When Vietnam hit the scene, the bird was desperately needed because of the terrain. Starting in about 1962 in South Vietnam the evolution of the helicopter became nearly un-stoppable. The bird went from a strictly observation aircraft to a medical evacuation machine, troop carrying machine, aircraft recovery machine, a gunship, an attack helicopter (the Cobra was America's first designed from the ground up specifically built (purpose built) attack helicopter, and even a VIP and CC aircraft (VIP-Very Important Person & CC=Command & Control).
The full might of the US military minus nuclear weapons.
President Eisenhower sent military advisors and maybe some technicians to Vietnam to help the government there stay in power. That was the beginning of US involvement there.
He created special warfare units...or at least gave them priority in future military involvement; the Green Beret and the SEALs.
they help in fighting fires.
America asked them for help, one day Australia might ask America for help. Australia was semi-surrounded with communist encroachment from it's north/northeast/northwest directions.
To prevent Communist North Vietnam from taking over the free Republic of South Vietnam. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ First yes there were two governments in Vietnam at the time. North Vietnam was a communist state and South Vietnam was democratic. Our involvement started when the french left Vietnam in the late 1950's. The south vietnamese asked the American government for help to train their soldiers to defend against the vietcong invasion. We sent over advisors and the north vietnamese started attacking the advisors so we sent troops over to help protect the advisors. It wasnt until the mid 1960's that we reached a full involvement in southeast asia. That point the idea was to patrol the jungles and so forth to continue helping to protect the south vietnamese and advisors we had training the ARVN (army of the republic of vietnam). Also another reason for our increased involvement was something called the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. The north vietnamese sank one of our smaller ships (a frigate i believe) so we increased troop strengh.

The groups within Australia that supported our involvement in the Vietnam war were: * The Returned Service League (RSL) * The Liberal party and Country (now known as National)party and * The older generation
A Vietnam visa will only help travelers who are visiting Vietnam. It is also worth remembering that Vietnam is divided. Check that the visa you have is for the right country, either North Vietnam or South Vietnam.
The North Vietnam Army (NVA) and the United States.(with help from Australia and minimal help from South Vietnam)
The Vietnam War was a type of proxy war. Although it was essentially North Vietnam vs. South Vietnam, the North was heavily subsidized by the U.S.S.R. and China. The South was supported by the United States and their allies. So while the cold war was mostly a stand-off without violence between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the communist countries banded together to help North Vietnam fight U.S. military without any major "direct" involvement.
