Orville and Wilbur Wright were the first of many to sustain flight on a heavier-than-air machine. They were the first ones to accomplish such an innovation. The announcement of the first flight ignited the world's passion for flying. The U.S Army signed a contract with the Wright Brothers' in 1908.
There was some experiments with gliders in the late 1800 but nothing yet for powered airplanes which is what is generally meant when referring to airplanes. Not until 1903, when brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright from Dayton Ohio, were the first to successfully fly a heavier than air powered airplane and have been credited with being the authentic true inventors of the airplane.
Henry Ford and the Wright brothers were both pioneers in their respective fields - Ford revolutionized the automobile industry with the introduction of the assembly line, while the Wright brothers made history with the first powered flight. Both were innovators who had a significant impact on modern transportation.

Today, in the US and the rest of the world, the airplane is a means of transportation that takes less time than any other type of transportation. Planes can travel thousands of miles without refueling. The airplane has also made an ongoing impact on military weapons. War time use of the airplane was extensive during WW 1. Todays jet powered military aircraft are powerful military weapons.
