-the soldiers didn't have adequate food, died of diseases, shortage of amo, no public support, didn't know who the enemy was, they were fighting a conventional warfare in an unconventional war -when they came home from the war there were food, money and job shortages because the Stock Market crashed sending them spiraling into an (economic) depression
France suffered greatly in WW1 in terms of the deaths of many hundreds of thousands of young men. It is difficult now to associate a war, primarily against Germany, with the defence of Serbia against the Austro/Hungarian Empire. The Verdun campaign, in 1916, is a very good example of the effects of the type of warfare in the First World War, and although the fighting was largely localised within the areas of the front line, as opposed to the attacks on the civillian population which would be much more prominent in WW2, the death toll in the trenches was horrendous, and the conditions unimaginable. It is a fact that there are few generals of WW1 that emerge with any credit: The French leadership was no better than anyone elses, but that is perhaps unsurprising, it was a war fought in a way which had no precedent, either in tactics or scale. The effects of this are evident in the feelings which make the Versailles Treaty such an instrument of revenge against Germany. This in turn is affected both by the historical effects of Napoleon against the Prussians post 1806, and the Prussian success in 1870-71. It remains then that war, in general, produces few winners, there is little to crow about when a generation has been so terribly scarred, and France in WW1 is a great example of this. French soldiers, on the way to the front, marching past their leaders, making the noises of lambs to the slaughter exemplifies this starkly.
The main two mental issues that the soldiers suffered from were :
Shell shock: a term used during the First World War to describe the psychological trauma suffered by men serving on the war's key battlefronts
Trauma symptoms: tiredness, giddiness, lack of concentration and some serious headaches
Some physical issues were:
They sometimes would have break downs making it impossible for them to be on the frontline
Some cases even varied. Some of the soldiers had panic attacks which caused them to run away from the battle field and if they were caught running they would be killed for being cowards.
The soldiers had to protect themselves by hiding in trenches. Therefore, they sometimes had trench foot, trench mouth and shellshock.
Modern warfare caused great physical and emotional trauma to the soldiers in World War 1. The new technologies included machine guns and mustard gas.
Many of them tended to get killed and wounded in the keisers little war. I doubt if they were too pleased about it especialy when they realised the cost.
