It did the job enough to end the depression. when the men went off to war, the women began to work (you've seen the schnieders commercial) and lots of jobs became open in factories supplying munitions and the like.
Although at the end of the war, when the troops came home, in most cases, their pre-war jobs were taken and they had to start over. Ask any veteran, and they'll tell you:
