A major contribution was the fact that the German planes had to travel large distances to get to England, and again to get back to their home bases. This cut down on the amount of time they could spend in the air over England. This restraint did not apply to the English planes.

Apart from that, there was radar - which meant that the British only had to scramble when they knew the enemy was approaching. Without radar they would have to patrol the skies on standby.

The command and control afforded by the radar centers and the observers gave Britain its best advantage. They were able to counter most threats readily. The Spitfire was at least the equal to the Messerschmidts that escorted the Nazi bombers, and were usually used to engage them. This left the bombers unprotected for the Hurricanes to attack. This one-two punch proved effective even though the British formation tactics were inferior to the German finger four formation, which the British adopted later in the war. Also, if a British flyer was shot down, he could be recovered and returned to his base to fight in another plane the next day, or even the same day. If a Nazi survived being shot down, he became a prisoner of war. The Luftwaffe was also fighting at the end of its flight radius, and the British were able to fight, land, rearm, and refuel a number of sorties each day.
