Babylonians became unhappy with the last Babylonian king, Nabonidus, Cyrus the Great invaded Babylon and many other leaders followed suit in the next years. Alexander the great conquered Babylon in 333 BC Babylonia became part of the Greek Seleucid Empire. By the time Christianity spread to the area in the first century BC, much of the Babylonian influence and culture had been lost or absorbed into other cultures.

A historiographic document, translated by A Leo Oppenheim and published in The Ancient Near East Volume 1 (Edited by James B Pritchard), gives a fragmented account of the campaign.

The king of Babylon, Nabodinus, in the time leading up to the attack was staying at Tema, and the record criticises him for not coming to Babylon for religious festivals. In the month of Tashritu, King Cyrus of Persia attacked the army at Akkad and all the inhabitants revolted, but Nabodinus had them all killed. Fourteen days later, Sippar was seized without battle and Nabodinus fled. On the sixteenth day, the Persian army entered Babylon without battle. Afterwards, Nabodinus was arrested when he returned to Babylon.

When Cyrus entered Babylon, green twigs were spread in front of him and the state of 'Peace' was imposed on the city. Cyrus sent greetings to all Babylon. Cyrus appears to have won favour by observing proper protocol with the Babylonian gods.
