China and Russia have always been at odds. China has not wanted Russia in it's sphere of influence in Asia. The fact that China was closed for many years until the 1970's makes a difference. The Chinese communist party has a different structure than the Russian party. Even today the Chinese communist approach is much more overly ruthless than Russia. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 communism in Russia has had to change to seem more democratic, but it is far from it. Both are in the United nations and are part of the security council and both have nuclear bombs. A balance of power must be maintained.
