he groups of native people incorrectly labeled "Indians" by Columbus were actually a diverse mix of different tribes which spanned the islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The people Columbus encountered are known as the Tainos. The different groups that lived in the Bahamas at the time of his arrival were the Eastern, Western, and Classic Tainos; the Island-Caribs; and a small group called the Guanahatabeys. According to most recent findings, the natives were spread

out among the large and small islands of the Caribbean, with the Tainos dominating the landscape.

Columbus wrote in his journals about his encounters with the Tainos he met on his landing. He wrote " In order that they might feel great amity towards us, because I knew they were a people to be delivered and converted to our holy faith rather by love than force. I gave to some among them some red caps and some glass beads, which they hung round their necks, and many other things of little value. At this they were greatly pleased and became so entirely our friends it was a wonder to see." He writes on Oct. 13, 1492 "They came to the ship in boats, which are made of tree trunk like a long boat and all of one piece.......they brought balls of spun cotton and parrots and spears and other tribes it would be tedious to write down. And I was attentive and laboured to know if they had gold and I saw that some of them wore a small piece hanging from a hole which they have in the nose, and from the signs I was able to understand that going to the south, there was a king who had large vessels of it and possessed much gold. I endeavored to make them go there."

Well, when Christopher Columbus first arrived to the Bahamas, he saw the native group of the Arawaks. They both looked at each other is disbeleif. Christopher Columbus couldn't believe his eyes. How did the first nations affect the europeans?

Well, when Christopher Columbus and Jaque Cartier came, the first nations gave them everything they had. Then the europeens used first nations as slaves. If the first nations didn't listen to the europeens they would be killed. That's exacty what happened. That's why today in North America we don't have many first nations left, soon they'll all be gone. So do we really like Christopher colombus because he dicovered North America? But we also have to remember that he distroyed the First people of Canada!
