How did emmeline pankhurst change the world?

Emmeline Pankhurst was a leader of the Women's Social and Political Union, a splinter group which broke from the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies in 1903. The NUWSS (or "Suffragettes") campaigned for women to be given the vote in Britain from the 1870s up to the Great War.

Peaceful requests had gone ignored so the WSPU gained public attention by disrupting meetings held by members of parliament, by chaining themselves to railings and by breaking windows. The sometimes brutal over-reaction by the police and the government brought them much sympathy.

The WSPU brought the issue of votes for women into such prominence that it could no longer be ignored. Partial suffrage was granted in 1918 but it was not until 1928 that women were given equal voting rights with men.

Emmeline pankhurst was the leader of the 'Suffragettes' - they wanted votes for woman. At first they just sent letters to the parliament asking for change, but when they soon realised this wasn't getting them anywhere they changed their strategy to violence and arson. She encouraged the suffragettes to do things like burn down boathouses - because they were a men only club. They also wrapped up rocks with paper and threw them at 10 downing street windows. Written on the paper were things like 'votes for women'. Her daughter Christabel and christabels friend were arrested for making a riot and when the policemen grabbed them, they were accused of spitting the policemens faces. When the women went on hunger strikes, they were force fed through tubes down their noses. Many women died trying to get attention. Some say this is what made parliament give women votes - the suffragettes making their point known. However some say parliament changed their minds because of how well women did in the war. They would be working in the munition factories and taking over the jobs of those gone to war - e.g van drivers, train drivers, factory workers e.c.t. It isn't known the real reason why they changed their minds - everybody believes differently - Emmeline Pankhurst or the women in the war.
