They remained near the farms where they had been slaves
Immediately after the Civil War, most newly freed slaves continued doing the same type of work they had been doing.
-They remained near the farms where they had been slaves
Some slaves chose to keep working for their previous owners, but this time they were treated better and were paid. Some moved from where they lived to start a new life. Others didn't know what to do with their new status.
Most stayed where they were. Durning the civil war when the union army came through they would slip behind their lines and become “contraband.” Contraband can’t be returned to its owner so escaped slaves were called contraband. Some joined the Union army and the first African American regiments were formed. Others followed the army and did things around camp. After the war they became sharecroppers, but the former plantation owners would charge them rent, for food, and for other needs so they never got out of debt. This was economic slavery instead of being property and then when Jim Crow laws were instituted they were not only economically slaves, but they had laws preventing them from their civil rights.
stayed in the South and worked as sharecroppers
lots of slaves, having no job or shelter, went back to work for their former masters for food and lodging, but not as slaves.
Many Became Sharecroppers, farmers who work on another person's farm for a share of the Crop's value.
