In Africa the French had colonies in Algeria Gabon Senegal and other parts of the continent. In India the French had colonies in Pondicherry and Chandannagar. In Southeast Asia the French had colonies in Vietnam Laos Cambodia and other parts of the region.The French colonies had a variety of different forms of government including military rule direct rule and indirect rule. The French also established trading posts and settlements in many parts of the world and many of these colonies eventually became independent states.
