General Grant planned to capture Vicksburg because if he succeeded, the United States would be one step closer to executing their plan to defeat the Confederate States. Their plan was to blockade Southern ports, seize control of the Mississippi River to split the Confederacy in half, and attack the Confederacy from all sides to surround them. How long was the Battle of Vicksburg?

1 day after General Lee was defeated at Gettsburg. ANSWER The investment of Vicksburg began on May 19,1863 with the attack against the Stockade Redan. On May 22, 1863 a general assault against the fortress took place. On May 27,1863 Grant decided to attempt for the last time to take Vicksburg by assault. After that Grant decided to start a regular siege, compelling the Confederate Commander, General Pemberton, to surrender the fortress on July 4, 1863. The battle (not the campaigns) to seize Vicksburg lasted therefore from May 19 until July 4, 1863.

Why did Grant take such an indirect route to Vicksburg when he had been so close in March?

Union attempts to capture the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi was wrought with failures. As late as early part of 1863, four unsuccessful attempts by General Grant to strike Vicksburg from the rear by moving his army on transports through the rivers and bayous to the bluffs north or south of the city were tactics that met with little success. General Grant tried very innovative tactics to solve the problem of Vicksburg. By digging a canal across the mile wide peninsula, Grant hoped to bypass the Vicksburg artillery, move the army on transports and attack the city from the south. Earlier attempts at capturing Vicksburg were attempted by Union Admiral David Farragut. After he had captured New Orleans, he sailed north to Vicksburg but his fleet was repulsed. Grant then believed that a land assault might prove successful if the Confederate forces protecting the city could be drawn away by a battle elsewhere where they were needed. In early November of 1862, Grant decided to attempt this by marching an army of 31,000 troops towards Grand Junction in southern Tennessee. There the town had a railway that Grant thought could provide him to the Mississippi to a landing point south of Vicksburg. Grant planned to link up with a sizable army under General Sherman. Despite the best intentions, Vicksburg did not fall. A series of maneuvers by Grant and Sherman still were unable to launch an offensive attack on the well fortified city. Finally by cutting off the supply lines to Vicksburg, Grant lay siege to the city. In summary, the assaults on Vicksburg began in 1862 and it held out until July 4th 1863. The fall of Vicksburg was an important victory for the Union. The length of time it took for the Union's river and land campaigns on a city that even Lincoln deemed to be essential, was not a good sign for the power & leadership of the Union's campaign.

Why did Grant decide to attack Jackson before attacking Vicksburg?

General Pemberton had his army defending Vicksbug. General Johnston had more troops oustide of Vicksburg and these threatened the Union with attack from the rear. Gen Grant may have thought he could take Vicksburg defenses by attacking from the river or from Port Hudson side. But he realized he had to lay a siege against Vicksburg. To do this, he had to defeat the forces that were outside of the city and surround the city. The Battle of Jackson(May 14) was fought to cut off re-inforcements from giving aid to the Confederates at Vicksburg. Then final battle occurred at Battle of Champion's Hill(May 16). This forced the Confederates back into the Vicksburg defenses. Link to a Map of Union advance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VicksburgCampaignAprilJuly63.png

How did the Union General in Chief Henry W Halleck frustrate General US Grant in the Vicksburg campaign?

US Grant had drawn the assignment to capture the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg. General in Chief Henry Wager Halleck had emphasized that the mission was of vital importance. Despite that, he sent a minimal amount of the reinforcements Grant believed he needed. Halleck finally understood Gtant's pressing need and sent him the following reinforcements:1. In January Halleck sent one brigade from the department of Ohio; and2. In March he sent eleven regiments from the department of Missouri. For Grant, this was not enough reinforcements. He complained to Halleck that he feared Confederate General Johnston was forming a large force to rescue the garrison at Vicksburg. Halleck, realizing the danger to Grant sent more troops and thus helped Grant to formulate plans to take Vicksburg ( again ) and to cut off any forces from Johnston to aid Vicksburg.
