General Grant planned to capture Vicksburg because if he succeeded, the United States would be one step closer to executing their plan to defeat the Confederate States. The US had a plan known as the Anaconda Plan to defeat the Confederate States. Their plan was to blockade Southern ports, seize control of the Mississippi River to split the Confederacy in half, and attack the Confederacy from all sides to surround them. General Grant's plan to capture Vicksburg complies with the seizing of the Mississippi River to split the Confederacy in half.

Major General Ulysses S. Grant attempted the second Union military operation to capture Vicksburg. The first one, undertaken by Admiral David Farragut, had failed. His attempt to bombard Vicksburg with his fleet of gunboats was not successful. Now, under the authority of General Halleck, General Grant planned the second Union attempt in 1862. Grant's army had been strongly reinforced for his push down the Mississippi River to assault Vicksburg.

Grant planned on two advances. His assigned to Major General Sherman a movement southwards on the Mississippi River. The second Union force, under Grant's command, would advance along the railroad towards the rear of Vicksburg's river defensive power which covered the Mississippi River.

Grant believed the two assaulting Union armies could support each other. Grant believed he could foil any Confederate reinforcement attempt by cutting the railroad that formed a link between Jackson, Mississippi and Vicksburg.

Both Union armies had to retreat. Confederate cavalry destroyed Grant's supply depot and forced his retreat. Sherman's attempt to attack from the river side of Vicksburg was beaten back by the Vicksburg defenders.

All in all, the Confederates lost only 207 soldiers and the North lost 1,776. Grant would be forced now to come up with a third plan to take control of Vicksburg.
