At first from 1607 to 1609 they were starving to death or dying of diseases from the bad water and mosquitoes. They called it the “starving time” and there is evidence that they may have eaten some of the men who died. Historians have found bones with teeth marks. Only when tobacco was introduced did the colony thrive.

In the very early days, Jamestown supplied lumber, pine pitch (a gummy material used to waterproof wooden ships) and made glassware. Later they began raising tobacco.
