It was LBJ who really sent troops and escalated the "police action " into a war and by 1968 the largest draft in US history. Nixon expanded the war into Laos and did secret bombardment. All of this was done on the foreign policy to contain communist aggression and to save the world for democracy. As it went on the newspapers carried more stories and every night on TV there was reports on site from Vietnam. It was the TV news showing the war that convinced the public the war was wrong. Notice we get very little about the Middle East nor about our men who have died there. That is not an accident.
