How did manifest destiney play a part in the war of 1812?

During the War of 1812, the emerging United States served notice to their former European masters that they had no rights to control colonies in the Western Hemisphere. It then became manifest that their destiny was to rule "from sea to shining sea."

Given that belief, (although the term itself was not yet in use) the US attacked its neighbour, with the intent of forcibly annexing Canada. British troops. natives, and Canadian militia inflicted serious losses on the invasion forces, which retreated back across the border, surrendering Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

The British went on the offensive, taking Washington and burning the White House. However, at no time did they attempt to retake the United States. In fact, weary of war after defeating Napoleon, the British rather generously turned back all the American territory it had conquered and signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war.

Ironically, the American invasion, (the second since an American army attacked Canada in 1775), and that notion of Manifest Destiny, brought English and French speaking Canadians together, and began talk of nationhood, which began a reality in 1867, eventually making Canada the biggest country on the continent.
