The goldfields were crowded and dusty places, and often lawless. Some people died as a result of fights, while ethnic groups such as the Chinese were viciously attacked for many reasons. Also, the goldfields lacked sanitation, with everyone using the creeks for a variety of purposes, so diseases such as cholera and dysentery were quite common.
