In the United States most people got it from the faucet. In most rural areas in America a hand pump was located outside where it was carried inside with a bucket. Some more clever folk would locate a hand pump in the kitchen so they could fill up buckets and heat them on the stove to warm bath water. As far as in Europe it was basically the same as in the U.S. When in battle I suppose there were supply convoys that carried water to the troops when possible. However I feel most people in need got it wherever they could.
