Barbaro fractured three bones in his off hind leg during the 2006 Preakness Stakes at the end of May. This sort of injury has a poor prognosis because a horse's legs are so fragile. When one is unable to take any weight - such as when it is fractured - the leg opposite it or on the same side often collapses because it has to support all of the horse's weight. A less valuable horse would possibly have been euthanised immediately. However, Barbaro would have been a very valuable stallion. The vets operated to repair the injured leg. The surgery was successful; however in July he developed laminitis in his near hind leg. He underwent five more operations and spent a very long time in the equine Intensive Care unit. When he subsequently developed laminitis in both front legs his owners made the difficult decision to put him down.
when he was in a preekness race his left front hoof at the pastern broke but the horse kept running the injury was supposed to be helped by euthanizing barbaro which would have saved barbaro from agonizing pain the injury was helped by suspending movement with that leg.
no he died Unfortunately Barbaro had to be euthanized due to the fact that his broken leg failed to hea. properly. His leg was healing, but he developed laminitist for which there is no cure and causes great pain.
