Semmelweis noted that women who were delivered my midwives were much less likely to die of "child-bed" fever. Doctors who delivered babies also did autopsies and didn't wash or used antiseptic methods. His finding were dismissed by many and because of this many women died. All this occurred long before before the Germ Theory of Disease was first postulated.
It was Semmelweis who first introduces antiseptics to prevent disease. The first sterlization ( not complete) was given by Pasteur, known as pasteurization.
