The bloodshed in Kansas in the 1850s, known as "Bleeding Kansas," was the result of intense violence between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces. This led to a rush of pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers moving to Kansas in an attempt to influence the outcome, resulting in clashes such as the Pottawatomie Massacre and the Battle of Black Jack.
