The signing of the treaty of Brest-Litovsk helped the communist regime in Russia in a great way. Once Russia surrendered, it marked the end of the Great War and Revolution which resulted in peace in the region.

Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk saved Russia from obliteration in the continued fighting of World War I and allowed the money going to the war to be redirected to the suffering people.
Russia lost part of its territory

World War I
Effectively the revolution ends Russias' involvement as a beligerant in WW1. Therefore Russia, indirectly, becomes communist because of WW1, but Communist Russia was not part of it, surrendering a massive amount of territory as a result of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
Russia, revolutionary-later Communist. The Communist movement in Russia began ostensibly as an anti-war movement not too different from that opposing the Vietnam conflict in the sixties and seventies. it then, well got out of hand, escalated into political violence and the St.Petersburg massacre, et al. Russia was out of the European theatre of war by l9l7, the American Heritage Landmark book of World War I clearlty begins the chapter heading- Exit Russia.
Russia had already concluded a separate peace treaty with Germany a year before on March 3, 1918: the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
Brest-Litovsk both saved Russia and doomed Russia. It allowed Russia to leave the war so the men fighting could return to their farms and grow more food. Because there was no longer an army to feed, that food would go to the peasant class and they were finally happy. It secured the Bolshevik communist hold on the nation, which was a more equal government that the tsarist regime had been. However, that communist hold sent the tsarist supporters into a rage and a Red versus White civil war ensued, ending three years later in 1921. Even more Russians died. And the communist victory paved the way for Stalin and totalitarian oppression as well as a half century of Cold War with the United States.
The October and February Revolutions brought the end of the tzarist regime and brought the Bolsheviks into power. The civil war ended all communist opposition in Russia, leading to communist takeover.
The result of the revolution in 1991 was the fall of the Communist Regime that had ruled Russia since 1917.

Under some dictatorships "atheism" is what is expected by the Communist regime eg: Russia before glasnost
