The people who owned the "safehouses" would then harbor the slaves for a certain (safe) amount of time, keeping them in places such as a large closet or hiding them in a cellar area. Trap doors were made in the floor boards of houses and hidden by placing a rug over them. The house owners would feed and cloth the slaves, and would wait for a chance to safely escort the slaves to the next "safehouse".
